Mondovi and Durand-Arkansaw fans are probably already lining up for tickets to
watch what could be an epic battle between these two rival schools just ten
miles apart. Durand-Arkansaw has quietly put together an outstanding season,
knocking off Regis and Elk Mound to race to a 5-0 record in the Cloverbelt. QB
Luke Weber threw for 206 yards and rushed for 50 more in his team's 42-6 blowout
of Fall Creek last week Weber has put together some impressive stats to lead the
Panthers. He has accounted for 26 total touchdowns while averaging 200 yards of
offense per game. The defense yields an average of 9 points per game but Mondovi
will probably be past that by halftime. The Buffs Bode Falkner has the Mondovi
offense on fire. Falkner is unlikely to put up the same numbers like he did
against Elk Mound, but it is also unlikely that the Panthers can keep Falkner
out of the end zone enough to win. Heated rivalry, final regular season
championship game, what more could the fans ask for. |

QB Joe Jensen's injury in Week 2 against Pewaukee slowed the development of
this year's Baldwin-Woodville team but everything seems to be falling into place
now at the most critical point in the season. The offense is back to being the
force it was expected to be but the defense has continued to also get better
each week. In this week's title clash with Osceola, the run defense will be the
key to winning. The Blackhawks will put points on the board, especially if they
control Osceola's running attack. The Chieftains average nearly 300 yards
rushing per game and will need that production to keep the ball away from Jensen
and company. Baldwin-Woodville's balanced offense is tough to contain but home
field advantage may be the edge Osceola's looking for in winning the Middle
Border title. |

New Richmond wrapped up the Big Rivers conference championship last week with
a 49-21 drubbing of Menomonie. The Tigers made quick work of the Mustangs behind
the explosive running of Austyn Wittek. Wittek tallied 208 yards rushing and 4
TDs before taking most the second half off. New Richmond has some decisions to
make about playing time for starters but coaches also want their players sharp
kicking off the post-season. Marshfield suffered a close 30-22 loss to Wisconsin
Valley champion Stevens Point last week, missing a chance to share the title.
Dropping back to back games would definitely effect Marshfield's seeding as
would beating an undefeated Big Rivers' champion. QB Ethan Foemmel needs to
rally the troops with an eye popping showing against the Tigers. |

The Cardinals lost games in Weeks 4 and 5 to New Richmond and River Falls when
the high powered early season offense disappeared. The good news is that the
offense is back, outscoring opponents 98-15 in the last 3 games. Playoff
ramifications for this game are clear. Beating Hudson moves Chippewa Falls to
7-2 and would also give the Cards the head to head advantage over Hudson for
playoff seeding. Hudson is ranked #9 in D1 rankings but the Raiders have not
played the toughest schedule. Hudson's 46-21 loss to unbeaten New Richmond was
not a surprise but their 7 wins have all come against opponents with a .500
record or worse. QB Grant Bjerke is by far the best quarterback in the Big
Rivers and will have to put that on display Friday for Hudson to keep a high
playoff seed. |

Unity played a challenging non-conference schedule this season that has
definitely impacted their post-season prospects. Two smaller programs instead of
St. Croix Falls and Amery might have the Eagles at 6-2 now instead of 4-4. RB
Josh Pouliot ran for 285 yards and 5 TDs against Cameron last Friday in the
Eagles 42-0 win. Unity will need Pouliot to repeat that performance to keep pace
with the outstanding Webster running back Ronald Hatch. In Webster's high
scoring 50-28 win over Elmwood/Plum City, Hatch plowed for 356 yards and 5
touchdowns to move his season totals to 1880 yards and 21 TDs. The Eagles are
battling for their playoff lives in this game while Webster wants to ride Hatch
as far his sturdy legs will carry them. |
