Here we go again. Last season Menomonie won the Big Rivers when they handed Hudson their only conference loss 36-24. After losing to River Falls two weeks ago, the Mustangs now know that their chance to win the Big Rivers has to continue with a win over Hudson. The Raiders have dominated the Mustangs in head to head battles in the last 10 years but the new teams that come to play never approach a game thinking they have the upper hand. Hudson needs another big game from QB Keyser Helterbrand to stay unbeaten and ahead of River Falls. A win by Menomonie throws the Big Rivers into a likely four way tie for first with 3 weeks to go.

This game has been the conference standard for a few years now. The other Lakeland North schools have not been able to meet the physical play of these two programs so that is why this game is looked at as the conference title game at the start of the season, no matter where it falls on the schedule. The Pirates have multiple weapons led by QB Luke Anderson and RB Leo Chenal. At 6'3" and 235 pounds, Chenal is a man among boys when he runs the football and that makes Anderson's play action passing all the more effective. At linebacker, Chenal is a force that can slow any running attack sideline to sideline. Unity's advantage is familiarity with Grantsburg's offense, defense and style of play. RB Hunter Houde is averaging 150 yards per game rushing and needs to hit that number for the Eagles to stay with the Pirates' attack.

The Mounders are sitting at 2-1 in the Dunn-St. Croix, needing one more win to qualify for the playoffs while Colfax, at 1-1, finds itself chasing two more conference wins. Maybe more importantly, the Vikings find themselves chasing a win over a quality team that would make them a team to be reckoned with in conference play and in the playoffs. Elk Mound graduated a number of talented seniors, in particular offensive linemen that had been, in some cases 3 year starters. Replacing that part of the offense has been an uphill battle. RB Brady Redwine has been on a feast or famine roller coaster this season. After running for 2598 yards his junior season, Redwine is well below the 216 yard per game average he had in 2017. Although Redwine has rushed for over 200 yards in 3 games this year, he has also had games where he was held to 56 and 36 yards respectively. Colfax is led by QB Noah Albricht and his 230 yards passing per game. Albricht had thrown for 9 TDs but has also thrown 8 interceptions as well. These two stars need to shine for their teams on Friday. The brightest star usually wins.

The Rockets have another big, physical team that grudgingly gives up yards and rarely gives up points. A dynamic offense led by Hayden Bauman has the Rockets in position to win the Cloverbelt with wins over Colby this week and then Regis in Week 8. Colby has quietly put itself into the Cloverbelt mix with 5 opening wins of its own. RB Tyler Klement is averaging 170 yards per game rushing and is the key to the Hornets success this week. If Sp/C can contain Klement, it is doubtful that the Hornets will have another answer on offense.

Last week, the Old Abes put 65 points on the scoreboard in a game that should have seen the head coach getting splashed with victory water but Chippewa Falls had a mind blowing comeback to hand Memorial a 67-65 (2OT) loss that will be remembered for a long time. Old Abe QB Bryson Johnson completed 31 passes for 450 yards and an astounding 8 TDs in Friday's game. Those would be good season numbers right now. But not to be outdone, River Falls QB Logan Graetz was near perfect in completing 17 of 18 passes for 348 yards and 5 TDs in the Wildcats' win over previously unbeaten Rice Lake. Memorial is at a disadvantage in the running game, losing RB Loyal Crawford to an injury while River Falls counters with a healthy, hard running Seth Kohel. River Falls is coming off playing the Big 3 of the Big Rivers, so a letdown in emotion could make this a dangerous game for them.
