Week 2 offered some surprises on the high school gridiron.  A very young and inexperienced Greenwood team upset Large Cloverbelt title contender Neillsville.   It's been at least a couple of decades since all three Eau Claire high schools started out the season a combined 0-6. The visiting teams (Bloomer and Edina, MN) spoiled the home openers at the newly renovated Dorais Field for both of the Chippewa Falls teams.

We have some interesting games in Week 3 as each of the conferences head into conference play. The HON conference will go from 4 undefeated teams to two after Friday night. Bloomer at Ladysmith matches a pair of teams both ranked in the Top 3 among small schools in this week's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel poll. The upstart Spooner Rails invade Chetek.

- Will Lake Holcombe finally surrender their first points of the year?
-Can anybody slow down the Owen-Withee scoring machine?
-Will Prairie Farm, Boyceville and Blair-Taylor score their first points of the year?
-The defending Division 7 state champion Gilman Pirates and state runner up Eleva-Strum Cardinals haven't  lost a step since their encounter in Madison last November.

With all due respect to the AP high school voters this observer wonders how it is that Mondovi can get a vote in the poll and Baldwin-Woodville can't?  The Blackhawks are 2-0 with two convincing wins and they beat Mondovi in week one.

The WIAC football teams went 7-0 this past weekend!! Let's hope that trend continues and maybe the WIAC will get two teams into the D-3 football playoffs this season.

The WIAC volleyball teams went a combined 22-14 in their matches this past weekend with some teams literally scattered all over the country.  Keep it locked in here for all your WIAC volleyball scores and standings as well as high school volleyball scores.

Be sure to check out one of our new website features this year........a WIAC player of the week.

Altoona alum and UW-River Falls junior Storm Harmon was named to the d3football.com team of the week for his efforts in the Falcons 52-24 win over Hope College. Harmon completed 17 out of 24 passes for 306 yards and 4 touchdowns. The 4 touchdowns tied a school record and he came within 4 yards of setting the school record for passing yards in a game.

The UW-Badger football team is ranked 5th alone in the coaches poll and tied for 5th with Oklahoma in this week's AP poll.  The Badgers face UNLV this week.

Our Packers prediction this year is for a 9-7 record which will be good enough to enter the playoffs as a wildcard team.
