It was quite a shocking scene at Stanley-Boyd high school last Friday night and it had nothing to do with the play on the field. A brown van driven by an elderly man backed into an ambulance that was parked nearby, stopped for a brief second and then proceeded to drive through the cyclone fencing that surrounds the football field, through a retraining rope and onto the football field hitting and knocking over one of the football goalposts. All this occurred while play had just begun in the 2nd half. Stanley-Boyd athletic director Lee Laflamme told the Chippewa County Herald the driver of the van just barely missed hitting a couple of baby carriages. Thankfully there were no injuries reported except the driver who was shaken up a bit. Play was stopped for about an hour. West Wisconsin Sports statistician Ben Zwiefelhofer was at the game and had this first hand account of the incident.

Ben: It was one of the scariest moments of my life.  This is how I remember it:
With about 11 minutes remaining in the third quarter I hear a car hit another car in the parking lot.  I looked back and I see it hit the ambulance parked along the chain-linked fence.  I see one guy dive out of the way.  I then see this vehicle, I now know its a van, going full speed through the chain linked fence and head for the football field.  At this point people are panicking and everyone is running, including the fans, coaches and players.  I looked up and I was running with one of the Colby players.  I did not know what was going on, nobody did.   Very scared. People screaming. Then the van stopped, but its tires were spinning and the RPM's were maxed out.  I could see people trying to get the driver out.

Then the van pops back into gear and heads straight onto the field.  I was very scared at this point, because it looked as if this person was on a mission to do something awful.  So finally the van smacks the goal post at near full speed.  The goal post tips over and there is more panic.  Parents looking for kids and other people looking for the wounded.  Unbelievably no one was hurt but the driver.  It was one of those moments where you see your life flash before your eyes. Also, the game was at midfield so no players were near the vehicle.  I can only imagine what would have happened if it happened during the middle of a play near the goal line.

The UWEC Men's basketball exhibition game vs the Wisconsin Badgers at the Kohl Center on November 7th will be televised by the Big Ten Network at 8pm.  However, as many already know Charter Communications which is the main cable TV provider in this area does not carry the Big Ten Network at this time. In order to get the Big Ten Network you need to have either DirecTV or Dish Network. Dish Network came to a carriage agreement just last week with the Big Ten Network. The Big Ten Conference just released it's 2007-2008 Men's basketball television schedule and 20 of the Badgers Men's basketball games will be televised by the Big Ten Network.  In addition this Saturday's Wisconsin Badger football game vs the Citadel is scheduled to be televised on the Big Ten Network beginning at 11am.
