Week 4 of the high school football season is in the books. Some teams are two wins away from an automatic berth in the WIAA playoffs while other teams need to get it together quickly to entertain post-season hopes. Looking at the standings which can be found on our homepage one can see that 23 teams amongst the 10 conferences that we cover are 2-0 in conference play. 12 teams from our area are 4-0 overall  and they include Menomonie, Gilman, Owen-Withee, Eleva-Strum, Melrose-Mindoro, Glenwood City, Spooner, Frederic, Lake Holcombe, Plum City, Baldwin-Woodville, and Somerset.
 
Other HON football coaches have been raving about Barron RB # 24 Derek Borgen . Derek had 167 yards on 13 carries and 5 touchdowns in the Golden Bears 54-51 win over Hayward last Friday.
 
Stanley-Boyd head football coach Jeff Koenig was named the Green Bay Packers high school coach of the week last week.
 
WIAC football and volleyball teams begin conference play this week. WIAC football teams have gone a combined 14-5 in non-conference play so far. WIAC volleyball teams have gone a combined 84-33 in non-conference matches to this point.
 
Congratulations to UW-Stout volleyball coach Jill Jolliff on earning her 300th career victory last Friday night in the Blue Devils 30-24, 30-26, 30-24 win over the College of St. Catherine's at the Bridge tournament in Superior. She is the eighth coach in WIAC history to record at least 300 wins.
 
UWEC has announced the hiring of Keith Muchow as Men's basketball assistant coach. Coach Muchow was a volunteer assistant coach the past five seasons to head coach Terry Gibbons. Coach Muchow is a native of Cuba City, WI.
 
UWEC sure cleaned up this week on the WIAC player of the week awards. The five players of the week include:
 
Cory Sartorelli ( football ) - Cory rushed 40 times for 209 yards and three touchdowns in the Blugolds 30-14 win over Alma College on Saturday
Meghan Sobotta ( golf ) -  Meghan finished 2nd out of 124 participants in this past weekend's Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic. She shot 75 on the first day and 73 on the 2nd day for a two day total of 148.
Amy Smith ( soccer )- Amy had a goal and and assisted on another goal as the Blugolds beat St. Olaf 2-0 and tied the University of Chicago 1-1.
Gina Dahl and Sarah Riordan ( tennis ) - The # 1 doubles team went 3-0 last week with wins at Stevens Point on Friday, at Oshkosh on Saturday and over UW-Green Bay (at Oshkosh)  also on Saturday.
 
Todd Voss has been named the new boys basketball coach at St. Croix Falls. Voss was previously the head coach for the Saints from 1993-1995.
 
Loren Mueller has been named the new boys basketball coach at Alma.
 
Wishoops.net editor Mark Miller recently reported that 6 foot 11 inch Eau Claire North Sophmore Evan Anderson has narrowed his college choices to eight. They include Wisconsin, Marquette, Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA, North Carolina, Iowa State and Boston College.Miller also reported that North Carolina and UCLA are the only schools that have not offered Evan a scholarship yet but could in the future. Flambeau and University of Wisconsin alum Jim Leonhard made his first career start in the secondary for the Buffalo Bills last Sunday. Jim had 5 solo tackles, 2 assists and 1 interception in the Bills 26-3 loss to Pittsburgh. For the season Leonhard has 13 solo tackles, 7 assisted tackles and 2 interceptions. Jim is tied for the NFL lead with those 2 interceptions.
