Week 5 of the high school football season is
in the books. Here is a look back at some things that grabbed our attention
in Week 5.
Upset of the Week: Loyal over Thorp.
The Greyhounds beat Thorp for the first time in 19 years by a score of 14-6.
It was defense that carried the day for the Greyhounds as they held the
Cardinals to less than 100 yards rushing.
Upset of the Week Part II: Grantsburg
got their first win of the season over Luck 17-9.
Teams that need to regain their early season
form: The afore mentioned Luck Cardinals and Bloomer
Blackhawks. Both teams have dropped two straight games. Two weeks
ago Bloomer looked like one of the top teams in the state but after tough
losses to Chetek and Spooner the wheels
have kinda come off their tracks.
Most improved team from the early part of the
season: The afore mentioned Chetek Bulldogs and Osceola
Chieftains. After an ugly 18-14 win over McDonell in week one
Chetek has outscored their opponents 76-7 the last 2 weeks behind a strong
defense and the running of senior RB Elliot Waterhouse. The Chieftains have
won 2 out of their last three games, and put up nearly 500 yards of total
offense against the previously unbeaten Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks last
week.
Top running back tandems in the area: Tyler
Tranor and Jerrod Tarman of the afore mentioned Osceola
Chieftains and Dustin Kroeplin and Zach Pomputis of Owen-Withee.
Glenwood City established
itself as the team to beat in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference
after a 25-7 thrashing of Colfax. The undefeated Hilltoppers dominated
the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and got key contributions
from John Emholtz, Nick Schouten and Justin Morrow.
Several area football teams are one win away
from qualifying for the WIAA playoffs which begin in October. The teams
include: Menomonie, Chippewa Falls, Neillsville, Stanley-Boyd,
Gilman, Owen-Withee, Eleva-Strum, Alma, Elk Mound, Spooner, Frederic, Shell
Lake, Lake Holcombe, Plum City, Elmwood, Somerset and Ellsworth.
Eau Claire North took command
of the Big Rivers Conference in girls volleyball on Tuesday
night by beating Eau Claire Memorial 3 games to none. Both teams came
into that match with a 3-0 mark in conference play.
Things are very unsettled as of this writing
in the Eastern and Western Cloverbelt volleyball standings.
In the East Colby, Mosinee and Stanley-Boyd all own 4-0
records in conference play. In the West, Altoona, Regis and Chippewa
Falls McDonell are tied at the top with 1 loss in the loss column.
Ten former athletes were inducted into the Eau
Claire Memorial Athletic Hall of Fame last week. The inductees
included: Todd Stein -1994 (swimming), Ron Poquette-1962
( football, basketball, baseball )
Bill Milne-1994 (swimming ) Julie
McNicoll-1985 (swimming, tennis ) Dave Johnson-1975
( basketball and baseball ) Harold Gelein, Sr.-1912 (
football, basketball, baseball ) Harold Gelein, Jr -
1958 (baseball and basketball ) Kirk Etten - 1978 (
basketball ) Sherm and Jerry Carstensen - 1996 ( basketball
)
UWEC soccer midfielder Gina
Christenbury (freshman-Kenosha Tremper ) has been named this week's
WIAC soccer athlete of the week.
Tim Petermann
recently retired as the UWEC sports information director.
Petermann began his work as SID back in 1967.
Brett Favre tied Dan Marino's
all-time career touchdown passing mark in the Packers 31-24 win over
the San Diego Chargers last Sunday. Brett has thrown 420 touchdown passes in
his career and will have a chance to break the record set by Marino this
Sunday vs the Minnesota Vikings at the Metrodome.
