It's WIAA Regional Final
Saturday for area boys basketball teams. Area teams still
alive include Eau Claire North, Menomonie, Chippewa Falls, Eleva-Strum,
Durand, New Richmond and more.....
Check out our top 5 games of the week feature
on our homepage which has been and will be updated frequently during the
boys and girls basketball tournament.
Today is also the final regular season
day for WIAC Men's and Women's basketball teams and there is a lot
that still needs to be decided at the top of both the Men's and Women's
Conferences. You can check out the current standings on our site and
check out the scores on our scoreboard page. Come back to our
scoreboard page early next week to find out which teams got what
seeds and when they play as the WIAC basketball tournament begins.
Today is also WIAA boys hockey
sectional final Saturday. The
Eau Claire Memorial boys hockey team which is 22-0 on the season
faces off against Lakeland with a return trip to Madison on the line for the
Old Abes.
Speaking of hockey that was UW-Eau
Claire's freshman goaltender Lindsay Savat who was on ESPNews Friday
afternoon with David Lloyd. Savat who is a freshman from
Bloomington, MN is an Iraq War Veteran and was featured in
a recent USA Today article which you can read right here. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/2008-02-10-iraqvet-savat_N.htm
Just like a year ago we've put up a
list of individuals on our homepage who have eclipsed the 1,000 point
scoring mark in their basketball careers during the 2007-2008 season.
If we have missed anyone please use the contact us button on our homepage.
As promised we will look at the WIAA Girls
Basketball Regionals which begin this upcoming week.
Division 1 Eau Claire North Sectional:
Eau Claire Memorial despite losing twice to Eau Claire North got the #1 seed
and EC North is the #2 seed. Memorial has a bye while North plays Hudson on
Tuesday. North and Memorial would have to be considered favorites to advance
to the sectionals while River Falls could be a sleeper team at #4.
Division 2 To Be Announced Sectional:
This sectional is by far and away the toughest sectional in the
state out of any division!! Altoona, Durand, Somerset, Rice Lake,
Sparta, Neillsville, Medford, Hayward, Northwestern, Amery,
Barron........ You could pick any one of those teams and make a
case for them to advance to Madison. Let's break it down by region. Unity
Regional.......Look for Somerset and Hayward to advance to the Regional
Final with Northwestern being a sleeper team in that bracket.
Spring Valley Regional: Look for Altoona to
meet Durand in the Regional Final with Rice Lake being a sleeper team in
that region. Wausau East Regional: Look for Neillsville and Medford to meet
up in the Regional Final. In the La Crosse Logan sectional look for Sparta
and West Salem to meet in the Regional Final.
Division 3 Altoona Sectional:
The Altoona Regional in by far and away the toughest of the Regionals with
Osseo-Fairchild and Mondovi there. You could make the argument those are the
two best teams in the entire sectional so yes those two will meet in the
Regional Final.
In the Hudson Regional look for Eau Claire
Regis to meet Prescott in the Regional Final. In the Rice Lake Regional look
for Ladysmith and Park Falls to meet in the final. In the Amery Regional
look for Colfax to meet Boyceville in the final.
Division 3 Holmen Regional look for Whitehall
and Melrose-Mindoro to be sleeper teams.
Division 4 Spooner Sectional:
Will Flambeau make a return trip to state? 1 loss Flambeau and undefeated
Clayton are the top two teams in this sectional and it would be a shock if
they didn't meet in the sectional final. Some teams that could surprise
include Siren, Birchwood, Frederic, and Thorp.
Division 4 Durand Regional in the La
Crosse Sectional we have
Independence and Eleva-Strum. Eleva-Strum handed Independence it's first
loss of the season not too long ago. Augusta from a strong Western
Cloverbelt Conference could be a sleeper team in that Regional.
Good luck to all the area teams
and next week we will look at the area boys sectional brackets.
