The WIAA Girls Basketball Tournament is getting underway this weekend at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Area teams making the trip include Altoona in Division 2, Colfax in Division 3, Eleva-Strum and Flambeau in Division 4. Altoona and Eleva-Strum are making their very first trips to Madison, Colfax is in Madison for the first time since 1994 and Flambeau is the defending Division 4 champions. Check back with this site for updated scores and boxscores of all the games and you can see those games on WQOW-TV 18.
 
The Chippewa Falls McDonell football program has hired Todd Brown as it's new head coach. Todd was an assistant football coach at Regis high school this past season.
 
The Big Ten Men's Basketball tournament gets underway on Thursday. The Wisconsin Badgers are the #1 seed and will play on Friday morning at 11am on ESPN. They will face the winner of Michigan/Iowa who play on  Thursday morning.
 
Eleva-Strum basketball standout Lance Rongstad was named to the AP All-State 2nd team. Those individuals receiving AP Honorable Mention include Tyler Brown-Eau Claire North, Andrew Lochmann-Rice Lake, Josh Prince-Chippewa Falls, Steve Pax-Elmwood and Jordan Petersen-Eleva-Strum
 
Eleva-Strum boys basketball coach Rich Roginski was named the AP Coach of the Year for leading the Cardinals to an undefeated 27-0 record.
 
UW-Eau Claire's Michelle Burns was recently named the WIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year.
UW-Eau Claire's Heidi Arciszewski and UW-Stout's Julia Hirssig join Burns in being selected to the WIAC Women's Basketball First Team.
 
Look for the 1972 UW-Eau Claire Men's NAIA championship game loss to Kentucky State (71-62) to be briefly mentioned in the upcoming ESPN mini-series Black Magic which focuses on African-American athletes. Travis Grant from Kentucky State led the Thorobred's to three consecutive NAIA championships. For the record the 1971-1972 Blugolds team went 29-2 which included a perfect 16-0 in the WSUC which is now called the WIAC. Black Magic airs this Sunday and Monday night on ESPN.
